As posted on my Facebook page:

RANT: "Church????" Not always what it seems.

If there are any of my friends are Jehovah's Witnesses, I apologize in advance for offending you, but these are the facts.

So last night, my friend Luke and I walked from the Men's shelter to my home to have a night of fellowship and food. 4 miles into the journey (1 mile from my house), Luke's pinched nerve in his back started acting up and each step was agonizing. We stopped at the Sanford Jehovah's Witness "church??" and politely asked the parking lot attendants if someone could give him a ride the last mile to my home. Not only was everybody "going in the opposite direction," I was told to go stand back in the corner of the parking lot with my friend out of the way. I was not allowed to approach anyone, or go in the church for a water fountain or restroom, or even a word of prayer for my brother. Out of about 50 cars, no one had enough compassion to help us out. Nor were we offered a drink of water, an encouraging word, or any aspirin or pain reliever for his aching back. He was walking bent over at this point. I was speaking to some sort of "preacher" or obvious church leader who had just come out and he seemed he would help us out, when the attendant spoke up for the grown man and said he was also "going the other way" and said that they just couldn't help us. Where has people's compassion gone? We were a little sweaty from the walk, but not drinking or smoking or swearing. We were two average Joe's walking to my home, him bending over and taking baby steps. No one at a "CHURCH???" could offer him a ride 1.4 miles from this location to ease his pain. What has happened to the love for mankind that Christ so diligently spoke of? Luke limped to the Dollar General where I asked a gentleman in the store for help. He was driving an SUV that was full, but instead of making up excuses, he told his kids to crawl in the back, helped Luke in the vehicle, refused gas money, and taxied my injured friend to my home, pulling straight up to my door to shorten his walking distance. And he didn't even live in this direction. My rant is this: If you proclaim the love of Christ and profess Christianity, PRACTICE IT! Everybody wants to give money to missions to send folks to those poor kids in Africa and South America to preach the Gospel, but no one wants to REACH OUT TO THE FOLKS ACROSS THE STREET! I have been kind to the gentleman that pulls up handing out literature once a month, and even read through some of it, but he and I will have a quick chat next time he hits my driveway! I am so thankful for this gentleman and his family putting themselves to an inconvenience to aid someone in pain. This was Christlike Compassion. A kind word, a simple gesture, a short lift...this is how Christ shows His love.
